What is speaking in tongues? – The ability to speak in an unknown language by the inspiration and enablement of the Holy Spirt.

What are the various functions or purposes for tongues in the church and in the life of the believer?

  1. To serve as a “sign” or “witness”
  2. To bear witness that a person has been baptized in the Holy Spirit

*Tongues were an initial, outward or physical sign that a person had been baptized in the Holy Spirit.

  1. To Be a witness to unbelievers

  1. To bring a “message” “revelation” or “exhortation” to the church (Gift of Tongues)

 

  • To assist and edify the individual believer by enabling them to pray the desires of the Spirit
